Possible Questions Some examples of what the panel may be looking for in your answer
Tell us a little about yourself. where you are from, why you started teaching, what your interests are within education, things done at university e.g. responsibilities in societies, general interests, what sort of person you are e.g. organised
Describe something you have done on teaching practice placement that you think has been particularly successful? What do you think made this successful?
Why did you apply for this school / position? Make sure you have a better answer than 'I need some money!'
What is your basis for successful teaching? Philosophy of education: enthusiasm, child-centred, stimulating classroom, variety of teaching styles (visual, auditory, kinesthetic etc), range of resources, relationships with pupils e.g. warmth, discipline
How would you lay out your classroom? This shows your personal approach and ethos in the classroom, and how this would contribute to whole school ethos. Multi-function room, resources labelled for pupils - independent learners, areas for different curriculum subjects always including Lit, Num, Sci and ICT, uncluttered, language rich-num/lit/topic words & other languages, flexible classroom for individual/group work, book area, rewards rules and sanctions. Clear Lit and Num objectives for term. Learning Walls. Interactive displays. Awareness of audience - children, staff, parents.

Education for life - behaviour wrong, not child, explain why they're being told off. Follow school behaviour policy - behaviour throughout school not just class. Children should know sanctions and rewards, and what is classed as good/bad behaviour. Specific class ideas, e.g. marbles, star chart, merits. Things I've used as incentives...
What qualities do you think are required of an effective phase member? how would these qualities be evident?
How would you see the role of parents in school and how would you encourage strong home links? Vital link. Partnership. Openness, honesty, approachability. Parents valued. PTA - gives parents voice, supports activities. Encourage open evening attendance. Class / year newsletters. Formal and informal links.
What do you understand by inclusion? Education for everyone. Identifying barriers to learning (attendance, different abilities, SEN etc) and teaching for all.
What do you consider to be your curriculum strengths and how would you use these? Good all round, but good at...because...
Use own experiences. Validate current skills.
What is the role of the governing body? Critical friend, responsibility, partnership, united voice.
How would you deal with a child protection issue? Follow school Child Protection Policy. Report issue to member of staff responsible, write it down (to keep confidentially). Do not question a child's account of events. Explain that you can't keep it a secret as it's too important and needs to be dealt with.
